An exciting development is underway for local farmers in the heart of Tasmania. The Water Use Efficiency project, delivered by Pinion Advisory with support from the TAS Farm Innovation Hub and funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, aims to support increased resilience to climate variability in the future.
Customised advice leading the way
The project focuses on practical solutions designed to make a real difference for farmers. It is guided by a group of seven farmers (including one external independent advisor) from different parts of Tasmania and different agricultural sectors, ensuring that the training and education provided meet the specific needs of the farming community. Pinion Advisory's team not only possesses technical experience but also can provide hands-on support to help farmers to address water-related challenges and make informed decisions for their farms.
Working together with farmers
In a crucial stage of the project, farmers were invited to share their input during the co-design process. Led by Jo Jones, the project team actively listened to farmers' challenges and needs related to water management. Discussions included the need for improved livestock water setups, support for maintenance of irrigation systems before each season, and making financially responsible decisions to enhance irrigation efficiency. The goal was not to find quick fixes but to ensure that farms could thrive in the long term. Jo Jones described the exercise as highly valuable. It involved gathering producers in small groups to hear firsthand about their water-related pain points and key needs in terms of extension and training.
What's next?
In collaboration with farmers, the next phase of the project will focus on creating customised activities and resources to meet their specific needs. The objective is to improve water management practices and empower farmers to handle different situations. This project is highly significant for the agricultural community and underscores the importance of working together and developing solutions that genuinely cater to their requirements.
